چکیده

A three-dimensional hydrodynamic model was used to determine 12 zones of upand downwelling in the southern part of the Baltic Sea. On the basis of a seven-year numerical simulation, the annual frequency of upand downwelling events in various regions was analysed, their vertical velocity evaluated and the probability of their occurrence for different wind directions calculated. Verification of the model results demonstrated their good correspondence with satellite images, on average equal to 92%. The poorest consistency was recorded for upwelling in the Bornholm region (81%). The annual average frequency of strong upwelling (velocities > 10−4 m s−1) ranged from c. 5–7% off the eastern coasts of the southern Baltic to > 31% along the north-eastern coast of Bornholm. Along the Polish coast (excepting the Vistula Spit) downwelling was recorded more frequently than upwelling. The frequency of strong vertical currents was highest in the area to the north of the Hel Peninsula, where high percentages of strong upwelling (27.1%) and downwelling (37.1%) were recorded. * This research was supported by the State Committee for Scientific Research, Poland (grant No 6 P04G 061 17). Nitrogen cycle of the Baltic Sea from an isotopic perspective

[1] Stable nitrogen isotope ratios (N/N; dN) were determined in sediments, suspended matter, and water at selected sites in the Baltic Sea area in order to set up a source budget and trace the fate of anthropogenic N sources. Sediments of the shallow near-coastal area of the southern and eastern Baltic Sea have an average dN of 7.3 ± 2.1%, interpreted as a characteristic trace of residual anthr...

Distribution and relationships between selected chemical elements in green alga Enteromorpha sp. from the southern Baltic.

The concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn and Mn) and macroelements (K, Na, Ca and Mg) were determined in green alga Enteromorpha sp. from the coastal zone of the southern Baltic including Gulf of Gdańsk and Vistula Lagoon in 2000-2003. In order to estimate the degree of accumulation of each element by the green alga, concentration and discrimination factors (CFs) with respect to s...

Coastal currents Submesoscale eddies Baltic Sea Remote sensing MODIS SAR CODAR

This paper presents an overview of the sub-mesoscale eddies observed in the coastal zone of the south-eastern Baltic near the shores of the Sambian Peninsula and the Curonian Spit based on CODAR (high-frequency coast-based radar) measurements and analysis of MODIS and ASAR satellite images for the period 30 March 2000– 31 December 2011. It was found that when winds are predominantly SW, S or W,...

Dynamics of the Freshwater-influenced Surface Layers in the Skagerrak

The Skagerrak receives large amounts of freshwater, both in the form of rather low-saline waters from the Baltic Sea and the southern North Sea and in pure form from local rivers. These waters, mixed with the underlying Atlantic Water, participate in a variable, mainly wind-driven, cyclonic surface circulation in the Skagerrak. This paper presents a thorough analysis of hydrographic data to pro...

Coastal and freshwater pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) populations differ genetically in the Baltic Sea basin.

Microsatellite DNA based analysis of the pattern of genetic diversity among three coastal and five freshwater populations of pikeperch Sander lucioperca in the northern part of the Baltic Sea drainage basin indicated marked genetic differentiation between the coastal and lake populations. The F(st) between these population groups was as high as 0.25 and R(st) =0.32. In general, the lake populat...
